Throughout the journey, the author and his fellow refugees were almost certain that they would meet a grisly end by hunger, imprisonment, or death. There was only a small sliver of hope that they could reach shore and find freedom. It lays in stark contrast to the refugee journey the author went on long ago, and was the inspiration for this poem.<\/p>\n<p>The refugee journey took the author to the Pulau Bidong refugee camp in Malaysia. The first image which comes to the author\u2019s mind\u00a0is that of the wreck of an iron ship lays on the coast of this isle (Pulau). The people\u2019s story told that the iron ship carried nearly six hundred people crossed the sea and sank off the coast of the island, killing almost everyone on board. However, for some mysterious reason, the currents eventually pushed the ship ashore. Many people on the island believed that perhaps the spirits of those who died on that ship, did not want their voyage to have no destination, so they caused the ship to drift ashore &#8211; as the final and sacred wish that they must fulfill in this life. Others say that one can find the human bones buried in that ill-fated ship. Unknowingly, the Malaysian government and the UNHCR still leave the shipwreck as it is.<\/p>\n<p>We bow our heads in silence and pay our respects to the hundreds of thousands of unfortunate Vietnamese boat people who never reached the shores of their sea crossing.<\/p>\n<p>This poem is a meaningful reminder for the author himself to not forget his own identity: THE VIETNAMESE BOAT PEOPLE.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>THE TWO SEA VOYAGES<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Looking at\u00a0the sea today<br \/>\nthinking of the sea long ago<br \/>\nIt\u2019s only the sea<br \/>\nonly another voyage<br \/>\nBut\u00a0the voyage today<br \/>\nand the\u00a0voyage long ago<br \/>\nare more different than night and day<\/p>\n<p>oOo<\/p>\n<p>The voyage long ago<br \/>\nThe voyage\u00a0today<br \/>\nThe setting of the boat<br \/>\nThe meaning of the\u00a0journey<br \/>\nI have mixed feelings<br \/>\nSo much to comfort<br \/>\nSo much\u00a0to embrace<br \/>\nSo much\u00a0to endure<br \/>\nEvery time\u00a0I\u00a0look back<br \/>\nMy\u00a0grief still abounds<\/p>\n<p>oOo<\/p>\n<p>The sea of the old voyage<br \/>\nis\u00a0not crystal blue<br \/>\nIt is black\u00a0sea of lurking death:<br \/>\nIt seduces\u00a0the soul,<br \/>\nfrightens\u00a0the eyes,<br \/>\nterrifies\u00a0the heart,<br \/>\nscares\u00a0the\u00a0mind.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0sea of savage fury<br \/>\nScreaming for sacrifices \u2013<br \/>\nOh\u00a0those soulless escapees!<br \/>\nThose afflicted\u00a0mourners<br \/>\nTired\u00a0from\u00a0thirst and hunger<br \/>\nNo strength left<br \/>\nJust wait to let go\u00a0of\u00a0life.<\/p>\n<p>oOo<\/p>\n<p>The waves of the old voyage<br \/>\ndo not pat the boat\u2019s sides.<br \/>\nIn bad weather, the\u00a0sea is rough<br \/>\nBillowing waves with silvery\u00a0tops<\/p>\n<p>When\u00a0night falls on the sea<br \/>\nThe waves rise quickly<br \/>\nWith\u00a0horrifying\u00a0dark\u00a0waves<br \/>\nlike a house with many floors<br \/>\nlike a sea monster<br \/>\nWith violence and thirst<br \/>\nEvery time it crashes\u00a0on us<br \/>\nIt\u00a0tries\u00a0to sink the boat.<\/p>\n<p>In this\u00a0fragile\u00a0boat<br \/>\nSixty-one\u00a0shadows.<br \/>\nScared\u00a0pale faces<br \/>\nNumbed\u00a0by fear<br \/>\nSome pray to God<br \/>\nSome pray to Buddha<br \/>\nThe line between life and death<br \/>\nis\u00a0thinner by the\u00a0minute.<\/p>\n<p>There is a voice singing<br \/>\nLike a mother\u2019s lullaby<br \/>\nEchoing from the deep sea<br \/>\nLike a summoning call.<br \/>\nThe call entices\u00a0us\u00a0to hell,<br \/>\nto the bottom of a black sea<br \/>\nMy heart\u00a0trembles<br \/>\nMy prayers\u00a0grow\u00a0hurried<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0boat passes through\u00a0the\u00a0swirling\u00a0sea<br \/>\nThe sky and the sea are\u00a0dark.<br \/>\nThere is an\u00a0ill-fated\u00a0boat that<br \/>\nSinks into\u00a0the dark\u00a0ocean<br \/>\nThere is a girl who prays,<br \/>\nnot with incense,<br \/>\nBut cuts her hair into\u00a0the\u00a0water<br \/>\nIn\u00a0the\u00a0night,\u00a0the\u00a0chanting\u00a0grows.<\/p>\n<p>oOo<\/p>\n<p>Five days and nights across the sea<br \/>\nIn a fragile wooden boat<br \/>\nAt\u00a0year&#8217;s\u00a0end, the sea is rough<br \/>\nLife is\u00a0held\u00a0at a\u00a0knife&#8217;s\u00a0edge.<\/p>\n<p>Five days and nights across the sea<br \/>\nI thought the boat was broken<br \/>\nby\u00a0the rough waves<br \/>\nas a sacrifice to the\u00a0ghosts<\/p>\n<p>Five days and nights across the sea<br \/>\nDeath is always\u00a0lurking<br \/>\nEvery moment of\u00a0dread<br \/>\nFacing\u00a0life and death<\/p>\n<p>Five days and nights across the sea<br \/>\nThe struggle has ended<br \/>\nThe mainland\u00a0is seen<br \/>\nTears of joy burst out.<\/p>\n<p>Sixty-one people<br \/>\nOff\u00a0the\u00a0boat of destiny<br \/>\nSo\u00a0speechless\u00a0but\u00a0thankful<br \/>\nto this\u00a0blessed\u00a0boat.<\/p>\n<p>Next is the\u00a0good news<br \/>\nAfter a few hours ashore<br \/>\nA\u00a0pregnant woman\u00a0is\u00a0in labor<br \/>\nAnd a baby is born \u2026<\/p>\n<p>oOo<\/p>\n<p>Tragic story of my hometown<br \/>\nYears of\u00a0war\u00a0ruined<\/p>\n<p>A long life of suffering<br \/>\nFull of blood and tears<br \/>\nFull of cuts and wounds<br \/>\nFull of\u00a0injustices\u00a0and fear<br \/>\nThousands people\u00a0crossed the sea<br \/>\nRisk\u00a0their\u00a0lives\u00a0on the ocean.<\/p>\n<p>The Vietnamese who crossed the sea<br \/>\nFaced all kinds of calamities:<br \/>\nImprisonment when caught<br \/>\nHunger was common.<\/p>\n<p>Misfortune\u00a0to those\u00a0broken engine boats<br \/>\nOr\u00a0those lost\u00a0navigating\u00a0for months<br \/>\nIn the immense of the sea<br \/>\nMeeting\u00a0the Demon King\u00a0is likely.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout the journey across the sea<br \/>\nDeath\u00a0is\u00a0always\u00a0lurking<br \/>\nNot to mention the pirates<br \/>\nNot\u00a0only\u00a0raid and\u00a0plunder<br \/>\nbut cruel\u00a0beyond measure.<br \/>\nInhuman bandits<br \/>\nPillages\u00a0and rapes<br \/>\nLike savage barbarians.<\/p>\n<p>oOo<\/p>\n<p>There\u00a0was a boat<br \/>\nThirty-two people<br \/>\nNavigation went lost for over a month.<br \/>\nFacing exhaustion and\u00a0starvation<br \/>\nThose who\u00a0were so frail<br \/>\nJust died at sea<br \/>\nAnd those who\u00a0were\u00a0alive<br \/>\nJust ate\u00a0corpses to survive.<\/p>\n<p>When\u00a0the boat\u00a0finally\u00a0arrived<br \/>\nHalf of them\u00a0had died<br \/>\nThe\u00a0other\u00a0half\u00a0who\u00a0remained<br \/>\nDrifted\u00a0like ghosts<br \/>\nTheir gazes were soulless<br \/>\nWith their eyes sunken<br \/>\nWith their skin\u00a0darkened<br \/>\nFrom\u00a0jaundice and edema.<\/p>\n<p>oOo<\/p>\n<p>There\u00a0was a boat<br \/>\nSeventy-two\u00a0people.<br \/>\nWhen they reached the shore,<br \/>\nOnly one survived.<br \/>\nThe ship ran into pirates<br \/>\nWho robbed and killed<br \/>\nThe men were thrown into the sea<br \/>\nThe women were raped.<\/p>\n<p>There was a wife who bites her\u00a0tongue<br \/>\nbecause of\u00a0insult\u00a0by the pirates<br \/>\nThere was a husband who bleeds<br \/>\nbecause of his resentment.<br \/>\nThere was a mother who risked her\u00a0life<br \/>\ndesperate to protect her child.<br \/>\nThe only surviving girl\u00a0who went mad<br \/>\nas\u00a0such\u00a0tragedy\u00a0haunts her still.<\/p>\n<p>oOo<\/p>\n<p>The story of the Vietnamese crossing the sea<br \/>\nIs a story\u00a0full\u00a0of\u00a0tragedy,<br \/>\nfull of blood and tears,<br \/>\nand full of life-changing stories.<\/p>\n<p>The story of the Vietnamese crossing the sea<br \/>\nIs the great depression\u00a0of our nation<br \/>\nIn the face\u00a0of imprisonment\u00a0and\u00a0death<br \/>\nThe boats still sailed.<br \/>\nMaybe we were not scared of\u00a0prison,<br \/>\nNot\u00a0afraid of death, my people?<br \/>\nIf anyone there ever asked<br \/>\nThen the question was already answered.<\/p>\n<p>The story of the Vietnamese crossing the sea<br \/>\nIn the twentieth century,<br \/>\nbecame a historical vestige<br \/>\nthat shocked humanity<\/p>\n<p>The story of the Vietnamese crossing the sea<br \/>\nDespite all the dangers<br \/>\nWe must add words to our history<br \/>\nAnd record \u201cTHE VIETNAMESE\u00a0BOAT PEOPLE\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>oOo<\/p>\n<p>The voyage long ago<br \/>\nThe voyage today<br \/>\nTwo voyages in a lifetime<br \/>\nwhen compared, I felt a limp in my heart<br \/>\nLike\u00a0my life hobbled on as I struggled forward<br \/>\nAnd after all these years I struggle still.<\/p>\n<p>Limping in the heart<br \/>\nLike\u00a0a\u00a0pain\u00a0in\u00a0my\u00a0life.<br \/>\nEvery step forward\u00a0has<br \/>\na shadow\u00a0turning\u00a0back<br \/>\nBehind a bright smile<br \/>\na painful stain\u00a0hides.<\/p>\n<p>The voyage long ago<br \/>\nThe voyage today<br \/>\nTwo voyages in a lifetime<br \/>\nmust be compared as\u00a0those<br \/>\nmemories\u00a0engraved in\u00a0my\u00a0heart<br \/>\nneed not reminding myself<br \/>\nAn identity which I must keep\u00a0\u2013 for the<br \/>\n\u201cVIETNAMESE BOAT PEOPLE\u201d<br \/>\nis the identity I received.<\/p>\n<p>oOo<\/p>\n<p>The history of the boat people<br \/>\nis full of the grief and hatred<br \/>\nOf the people in Vietnam<br \/>\nin a time of national crisis.<\/p>\n<p>The history of the boat people<br \/>\nis a scene of the hellish life<br \/>\nOf\u00a0the\u00a0people in Vietnam<br \/>\nat the very heart of\u00a0truth<\/p>\n<p>The history of the boat people<br \/>\nis the\u00a0cry\u00a0in silence<br \/>\nof many\u00a0Vietnamese generations<br \/>\nfull of blood and tears.<\/p>\n<p>The history of the boat people<br \/>\nto struggle against\u00a0the death<br \/>\nto find a way to live<br \/>\nand\u00a0to live as humans<\/p>\n<p>The history of the boat people<br \/>\nWho escaped in pursuit\u00a0of hope<br \/>\nin the midst of despair<br \/>\nin their miserable life<\/p>\n<p>The history of the boat
